On a more positive note

March 28th, 2008 (10:43 pm)

Do you ever think about how incredible it is, all of us slashers finding each other here? That so many of us love the same things, albeit in different ways - and that we find each other here and share and fight and happyhappy-joyjoy each other?

I still remember that first flash of wonder when I realised I wasn't alone. Long before the internet, when slash was typed out by intrepid heroes and photocopied by generous souls and bound into zines or sometimes just stapled together and posted.

The first time someone else put into words a desire that was barely half-formed in my mind and I was like "Yeah. Yeah, that's it." The first zine put in my hands, the first time I actually sat down and wrote something and gingerly proffered it to someone who snatched it up and printed it.

God, that we all found each other like survivors of a shipwreck clinging to little bits of driftwood. And now here we are, all buoyed up in this warm, fertile sea, telling stories and creating communities and all of us coming together because of slash, because we all like the idea of two guys in love with each other.

I think it's pretty incredible. Yay us!

*raises hand*
I think it's incredible. Not only that there people writing about 2 guys in a relationship but that so many of them are damned good writers^_^ There's also a sense of community among the fans, no matter how loosely I use that word, that makes one feel better.

I think community is definitely the word, and communities can be good or bad. I hate to think what I'd do without my little community of Friends here online. It would be very lonely and dull I'm afraid!

And yeah, the writers are something to be grateful for as well. I couldn't count the number of free hours of entertainment they've given me.

Right behind you about that one!

I'm glad for the Internet which allows me to feed (mostly for free) my appetite for slash. And thanks to the authors.

Personnally, I only discovered the joy of slash fics pretty recently: no more than two years... Can you believe that?

Two years! You're a mere babe in the woods!

It's been very many years for me - times I've been deep into fandom and times when I've just skimmed it. Times I've written and times I've only read.

And yeah, all those wonderful (mostly) free stories!!

Slash is a force of nature by ayascythe

You're awesome, putting that into words. I remember when I was in grade school, and stories about close friendships between two men were my favorite thing. And then I got older, and even if I couldn't fully understand some of the sexual implications that might be there, I became obsessed about books/mythology/movies/etc with close male bonding, and started to have a hint of sexual feelings about it but thought it was just me being weird.

And then I found some erotica a few years ago that had m/m sex that put me through the roof, but it was such a rare find for someone who didn't have access to gay porn shops.

Finally I discovered slash through LOTR fandom and was shocked so many were turned on by the same things as me. Whoa. And now through BBM and SPN fandoms too. Incredible.

Wasn't it a wonderful feeling? Finding you're not alone?

And gay porn is one thing - but slash is just so much better, because it's written by us, women who care. :-)

Revised Edition

Gods... I remember that time - long ago in dreamtime...LOL
Remember that Christmas party? And turning up at whats-her-names place the next day to borrow those man from uncle zines? Remember waiting for the mailman to drop off those A4 sized envelopes? Going to Con's and buying just about anything you could get your hands on? Meeting people and being able to TALK about those boys that you could just see belonged to each other...
Sometimes I miss those more "innocent" times...

Her name was Linda - and I bow down and kiss her feet in gratitude! Yay!

Man From Uncle & The Professionals - and I don't miss waiting months for a few stories - I prefer my slash on tap. :-)

Gosh you know that isver tru.. i remember I stumbled upon slash quite by accident.. i was looking for a LOTR story .. and i was so captivated by the writing that when the slash did occur .. it made perfect sense.. and there was nothing strange or wierd about it... and that one experience has opened the doors to such an amazing world for me. I think I would forever be indebted to that LOTR author!.. and every other author ever since then I have stumbled across ..(yourself included);-)

I feel indebted to the lady who first mentioned slash zines to me at a Christmas party - *shouts out* THANK YOU, LINDA!

We should have a Thank You Day on our Friends List, shouldn't we? Thanking the writers and the people who run the communities and the digests etc.

:-)

I actually feel a bit spoilt - remembering those long-ago days. I have more fic sitting waiting to be read than I have time to read - and I can't say enough about the instant gratifcation of feedback.

Very cool!
