I must be nuts!!

May 13th, 2008 (07:35 pm)

Craziest thing I've ever done? You decide!

I bought a puppy! It was love at first sight, then regret for a few hours, then terror at the responsibility I've taken on. And now we all just love him to bits and dote on him like mad.

He's a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel,  a Blenheim, which means he has rich chestnut colouring on a white background. He's super super smart and just a love-sponge. He'd all about the cuddles and the snuggling.

Sorry about the crappy picture quality, the only time I managed to get him to stand still was when I had my camera-phone.

I've wanted a pet for Dad for a while, he can't walk as much as he used to and he gets bored staying at home so much. Well, he's not bored now! I have to work so much (partly to pay for this little guy) that Mum & Dad take care of him most of the time. Dad has really brightened up with this new interest in his life, and even Mum (firm & unbendable Mum) has fallen for him hard.

Now, the bad news is that I bought him from a petshop, which is a big no-no. (But it's not his fault he was a pet-shop slave!) The upshot of buying from a petshop means his vet check is worth crap and he's probably closer to 4 months old than the 3 I was told.

He also has blocked tear ducts ($$), a hernia (hopefully won't be a problem), only one descended testicle (could be expensive if it doesn't descend by the time he has to be spayed). He also had fleas, which he sure didn't pick up here.

Good news is his heart is fine, which is always a concern with Cavvy's. Here he is again:

Love Sponge! Money-Pit! My little guy!

Yeah, his face isn't quite so squished in as most cavvy's, in fact I'm pretty sure there's some other breed mixed in their, a generation or so back. His ears are a little short and his tails not so plumy.

But he is cute all right. And lovable. And a chewer of all things.

HEE! OMG SO CUTE!!!

We bought a guinea pig a couple of weeks ago, and it's tiny, but it's still too much responsibility... and as much as I want a dog, i know it would be too big for me to handle with the job I have and the Uni stuff.

But then, you have your parents to help you out, which is good. AND HE IS SO CUTE.

Responsibilty, yeah. It's a bit daunting at times. But he is a very well behaved little chap, we lucked out there.

I can't believe I forgot to mention his name!

The pet shop folks were calling him Charlie, (cos he's a King Charles Spaniel), but Dad had a brother named Charlie, so we couldn't call him that.

I wanted something with two syllables, so it sounded a bit like Charlie, and we went through Buddy & laddy and Ozzy & Izzy and then I came up with Sammy, and we all liked it.

So he's Sammy!

He's adorable!!

And while you're adopting things, you want a 13yr old boy? He's probably about as house-broken as the puppy... ;)

Ack! I have to tell you - I have a whole new respect for mums now, because believe me, a puppy is almost more responsibility than I want!

You're stuck with him I guess. ;-)

I know! The hell??

I've been meaning to call you but I have not had a chance to breathe, I've been so busy. Not just with Sammy, but it's the big Year 3,5 & 7 test in Qld this week, and I've been working overtime helping out at school.

How's your ankle? All your muscle's gone squishy yet?

I think CKCS are the most cutesst of small doggies, and your little guy is so SWEET!!!! I'm sorry he has some health concerns, but at least now you know and can have them all taken care of before it becomes serious. And he will make wonderful company for your dad and mom. Have you named him yet? I just want to squeeze him he's so adorable!

Yeah, better us than someone who wouldn't take care of him properly. And we love him. :-)

I can't believe I forgot to mention his name!

He's gorgeous. I adore the ears of spaniels, so soft and strokable.

Crazy maybe, but he's beautiful and loving so what more could you want?

I wouldn't say a hernia is normal, but it does happen and if they disclosed that with you and there is a problem (which there shouldn't be if it was repaired) you can take them to court.

He looks about five months actually but I could be wrong since I don't know how big he is IRL. They should've given you his birthday though for you to really know.

For the record, not all petshops are like that. I've worked at one for over a year and its NOTHING like that. True, I don't really believe in it (which is why I quit recently) but some of those things have nothing to do with the petshop itself. Cavaliers have tricky eyes as it is and him only having one descending testicle isn't really their fault. Again, if the eyes are bad and they disclosed that, they should back you up a little when it comes to treatment.

Like I said, I didn't really believe it what I was doing because I'm too much of an animal lover keep it up but I can proudly say that all of our dogs are VERY well taken care of.

Also, I love, love, love Cavaliers. After working with puppies for a year its safe to say that they're my favorite kind of dog. You honestly couldn't have got a better doggy :D

The pet shop didn't tell us a darn thing, but that's the chance you take without a Vet check in writing.

He is wonderfully well behaved, placid and good natured, quiet and smart.

Toilet training might be the thing that kills me though. ;-)

Oh, so adorable. I don't know what it is about me that I can look at pet photos for hours, but I'm pretty much at my limit with three baby pictures.

Yeah, they've brightened up already, and Dad even cleans up accidental poop! The man fathered seven kids and never changed a nappy, but he cleans up pee & poop without complaint.

hehe

It just seemed the right time for us, and I'm glad we gave into the impulse when we found him.

Despite the acres of poop we've cleaned up...

Thanks! - I change the layouts pretty often depending on my mood - usually just throwing together stuff I've saved that looks interesting. I'm stuck with the three column layout though cos I need to be able to change font size - my old eyes, you know. ;-)
