I first read The Kite Runner on Good Friday this year. Hosseini chose a brilliant title for that book, because still, whenever I hear the word 'Afghanistan' I think 'The Kite Runner'. Which makes me think of that scene. Which hurts. So all things considered, I put of reading A Thousand Splendid Suns for as long as I could. 

The problem I had with The Kite Runner is...fairly ridiculous. It felt too real, to me. In fact it, for the most part, felt so real that I forgot it was fiction. Which meant that when something happened, when someone appeared so coincidently, I thought 'There's no way that would have happened'. Only then, of course, I remembered that The Kite Runner was fiction, and that these coincidences were perfectly allowable, and even necessary. Sometimes that was a little jarring; I didn't have the same problem with A Thousand Splendid Suns. 

A Thousand Splendid Suns is a story full of love and hope. It is about the strength of the human spirit, even in the worst of situations.
 

My phone broke. I'm several hundred dollars in debt already so there's no way in hell I can afford a new one. So I won't have a phone for a while. Probably a very long while.

Why this should be read: Yes, I've already recced a story by Salieri, but her work is well worth reccing repeatedly. This is a fascinating take on Jack, before we meet him in the Empty Child/Doctor Dances. Jack as Salieri writes him is gorgeous and rich and full of longing. It's perfect Jack, and the musing of space and time and morality when you're a time agent is chilling.

I wish I was at Comic Con in San Diego, so much incredible cool stuff happening there right now, it seems like it's the mecca for geeks.

I'm reading various blogs from people who are there right now, and I'm seething with jealously. Hugh Jackman, Wolverine footage, Red Sonja, The Rock, Keanu Reeves, Guy Ritchie, Free High Fives... seething.

What am I'm doing tomorrow in rainy Sydney Australia, well I'm going to a book fair in Sydney's North West... it will be fun, I'll take my video camera and pretend I'm at Comic Con at San Diego.

Yes, I'm reading ridiculously fast lately.

The next offering is Holly Black's Tithe, so if you're a fan of faeries, you should check this out. I'm NOT a fan of faeries, and read this solely because I was interested in Black's work. And having already read Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely and Elizabeth Bear's Blood and Iron, a lot of this book felt very, very familiar to me, even though this book was published first.

Still, I enjoyed it, but mostly for the romantic elements than anything else, though Black does have some lovely bits of prose in her pages.

The premise: Kaye's always seen faeries. Hell, they were her "imaginary" friends when she was a kid. But since then, she's traveled the country with her rock-star mom, and has since grown out of touch with her faerie friends. But when an incident forces her back home to Jersey, she soon learns her friends weren't imaginary at all, and what's more, they need her help. Unfortunately, her help could mean her death.

As I stroll through one of my favorite rec lists, every so often I come across a fic that's been deleted or the journal is locked. I figured I'd see if anyone has better Google skills than I do and could maybe hunt down these two specific ones:

"Restitution" by stellahobbit--Rodney accepts what he thinks is penance for his behavior in "Trinity." So Rodney assumed, taking all evidence into consideration, that he had been forgiven, because you didn't stomp into someone's bedroom in the middle of the night, stare at them in that pissed off manner that made your hackles rise and your insults sharp, then push you up against a wall and stick their tongue down your throat unless they meant it.

Journal has been deleted and purged... did they have a website I don't know about, or is this fic lost to the nether?

That Which Was To Be Proven by mmmchelle--Rodney tries to prove, empirically, that he's not in love with John. RM prefers women. JS is not a woman. Therefore RM does not prefer JS.

I've checked Chelle's website, but it looks like this fic hasn't made it over there yet. I'm hoping I'm just stupid and have missed it posted elsewhere?
